Scientific Journal Discussion Guidelines

Critical review of scientific literature involves looking at the data presented in journal articles and evaluating the strength of the evidence when it is presented objectively, apart from the opinion of the authors of the articles. Do not be surprised if you do not reach the same conclusions as the authors after looking carefully at the data.

Background. What is the main question addressed by the research, and how does it fit into the current literature? What is the hypothesis being tested? What are possible alternative hypotheses?

Review of data, panel by panel. Does each analysis performed address the questions posed? Were the data presented in an understandable and clear way? Do the results rule out or support any alternative hypotheses? What were the controls and were any left out?

Article critique. What do the authors claim their results mean? Does the data support their conclusions? Have they stretched or over-interpreted the results, or are they conservative in their interpretation of the findings? Are there any alternative explanations for the results obtained?

Future directions. How would you proceed if you were the director of this research project? What experiments would you do to extend the results and to advance knowledge in this field? Can you raise some new questions or think of experiments that they could do to make their point more strongly?
